Kitchen knives can be used for a variety of tasks. They are divided into several categories that chefs use very carefully. Nowadays, you can find chef’s knives, paring knives, utility knives, bread knives or butter knives, as well as carving, slicing, cleaver, boning, filling knives or cheese knives.
Most of the knives chefs use to prepare amazing dishes can be sharpened using a variety of tools. The modern knife sharpeners are electric devices that consist of two or three slots and several adjustable options. In lack of such a sharpener, the knives can still be sharpened using manual tools such as honing steels, diamond stones, whetstones and more.
Although all of these tools are useful and can help chefs obtain the edge they need, there is nothing like an electric knife sharpener. Continue reading to see why.
How does an electric knife sharpener work?
As the name suggests, the electric knife sharpener is a device that is powered by electricity and that includes one or more buttons. Once plugged in, the start button must be pushed and the machine starts functioning.
Depending on the knife sharpener model you own, it is recommended to adjust the settings first. Use an angle guide and use any attachments that the machine includes if necessary. Set the desired position and choose the slot that suits your needs best. Any electric sharpener has at least two slots. The first one should be coarse, which means that it is ideal for dull knives. The second one should be finer and it is suitable for knives that still cut, but need honing. If a third slot exists, it is most probably an even finer one that is used to obtain a smooth blade, without imperfections.
The second and third slots can be used on a daily basis in order to maintain the blades of the knife. The first one should be used on a regular basis, but not as often as the other two.
You will observe that once you turn on the sharpener, the slots will enable and you can start sharpening the knives. When you’re done, you simply have to turn it off using the on/off button.
How to sharpen a kitchen knife?
Once you get used to the knife sharpener, the entire process becomes easy and comfortable. To sharpen any knife, simply clean it, start the machine and choose one of the slots, together with the sharpening angle and the edge type if applicable. Slide the blade of the knife through the slot, starting from its base, not its tip.
Repeat three to four times and check the blade under good light. If you are not sure whether or not the blade is sharp, try cutting a piece of paper. You will surely be able to tell if it is sharp enough. If not, pass it through the slot two more times. Try not to insist too much, as the machine will remove more metal than necessary if you do.
Do the same thing with your other knives.
